Fractional CO2 and Erbium (Er:YAG) are the two workhorse ablative resurfacing lasers. Both remove damaged surface layers and trigger new collagen, softening wrinkles, sun damage, texture, and scarring. The difference is depth, downtime, and who they suit. Here is how we decide at LuXe Concierge Aesthetics in Davie & Weston, FL.
Quick comparison
| Fractional CO2 | Erbium (Er:YAG) | |
|---|---|---|
| Wavelength target | Deeper thermal effect | More precise, shallower ablation |
| Best for | Deeper wrinkles, significant sun damage, acne scars, laxity | Fine lines, texture, tone; gentler resurfacing |
| Downtime | Longer (about 5–7+ days) | Shorter (often a few days) |
| Skin-tone caution | Higher pigment risk on deeper tones | Often better tolerated, still individualized |
Which is better for wrinkles?
For deeper wrinkles and heavier sun damage, fractional CO2 usually delivers more dramatic results in one session because it works deeper and drives more collagen remodeling. For fine lines and surface texture, or if you cannot take much downtime, Erbium gives a refined result with a faster recovery.
Deborah’s Clinical Perspective
I think of CO2 as the heavy hitter and Erbium as the precision tool. When a patient has significant photoaging and can plan a week of downtime, CO2 gives the most transformation. When someone wants a smoother, brighter finish with less recovery — or has a skin type where I want more control over heat — I lean Erbium. Because I perform every laser pass myself and tailor the settings to your skin, the “better” laser is simply the one matched to your skin type, your concern, and your calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Is CO2 or Erbium more painful?
Both are done with numbing; CO2 is more intense and has a longer recovery. Most patients tolerate both well with proper preparation.
Which has less downtime?
Erbium generally has shorter downtime than fractional CO2.
Can these treat acne scars?
Yes — fractional CO2 is especially effective for atrophic acne scars; Erbium can help milder scarring and texture.
How many sessions will I need?
CO2 often produces strong results in one session; Erbium and lighter protocols may be repeated. We plan this at your consultation.
