How do you treat sun damage and brown spots?
“Sun damage and brown spots are very treatable, but the right plan depends on your skin type and how much downtime you can take — which is exactly why I personalize every treatment. For lighter skin types, IPL (photofacial) clears brown spots beautifully; for texture and deeper damage, Erbium or CO2 resurfacing does more, and chemical peels are a gentler, lower-downtime option that layers well with a good routine. On darker skin I choose more conservatively, because aggressive light or heat can create more pigment rather than less. None of it lasts without protection: daily medical-grade skincare and broad-spectrum sunscreen, ideally a tinted iron-oxide formula. Two we love and carry are EltaMD sunblock and Pavise Daily Age Defense. And it is not only the sun — visible and blue light from screens and indoor lighting drive pigment too, so I recommend sun protection even when you are indoors.”

Years of Florida sun leave their mark: brown spots, uneven tone, redness, rough texture, and fine lines. A combination approach corrects existing sun damage and protects against more.
Best treatments for sun damage
- IPL photofacial — fades brown spots and diffuse redness.
- Fractional CO2 / Erbium resurfacing — resurface texture, deep sun damage, and fine lines.
- Chemical peels and pigment treatments — brighten tone and target discoloration.
Deborah’s Clinical Perspective
Brown spots and sun damage are the visible record of years of UV and visible-light exposure, so my plan always has two halves — clear what is there, and stop making more. What I use to clear it depends on your skin type and downtime: IPL is wonderful for brown spots on lighter skin, Erbium or CO2 resurfacing handles texture and deeper damage when downtime is available, and chemical peels are the gentler, layer-anytime option. On deeper skin tones I am more conservative, because heat and light can trigger more pigment rather than less. The second half matters just as much: daily medical-grade skincare and broad-spectrum, ideally tinted iron-oxide sunscreen — we love EltaMD and Pavise Daily Age Defense — because screens and indoor lighting add up too. Treat the damage without changing the daily habits and it simply comes back.
