What Fractional CO2 Resurfacing Actually Is

CO2 is the heavy hitter of skin resurfacing. It sends tiny columns of laser energy deep into the skin, creating controlled micro-injuries while leaving the skin in between intact so healing is faster. That kick-starts a powerful wound-healing and collagen-rebuilding response — resurfacing damaged skin and laying down new collagen from a single series. When someone wants a real, visible change, this is the treatment that delivers it.

What CO2 Treats

Because it works deep, CO2 is suited to the tougher concerns — deeper wrinkles and fine lines, acne scars and other textural scarring, significant sun damage, enlarged pores, rough texture, and early laxity. It also does beautiful work on the neck, chest, and hands, where sun and age tend to show first.

Fractional vs. Fully Ablative — Why the Depth Is Customized

“Fractional” means only a fraction of the skin is treated at a time, leaving healthy tissue in between to speed recovery. Depending on the concern and how much downtime fits your schedule, the laser can be dialed from a lighter, faster-healing pass to a deeper, more corrective one. There’s no single fixed setting — the depth is matched to your skin and your goals.

CO2 or Erbium? How the Choice Is Made

This is one of the most important calls in resurfacing. Both CO2 and Erbium resurface the skin, but they suit different people. CO2 runs hotter and goes deeper, making it the choice for more advanced wrinkles, deeper scars, or laxity — with the trade-off of more downtime. Erbium is more precise with less heat spread, so it heals faster and is often the smarter pick for lighter resurfacing, more delicate skin, or anyone who can’t take a week off. Choosing correctly between the two is exactly what separates a great result from an average one.

What to Expect and the Downtime

To be direct: CO2 has real downtime. Skin will be red, swollen, and sensitive, and it typically peels and heals over about five to seven days, followed by some pinkness that fades over the next few weeks. Results keep improving for months as new collagen builds. Detailed before-and-after instructions are provided, with support reachable throughout healing.

Who’s a Candidate, and Who Isn’t

Anyone wanting meaningful improvement in texture, scarring, or wrinkles who can plan for the recovery is likely a strong candidate. CO2 calls for extra caution — or a different approach — with darker skin tones (higher risk of pigment change), active infections or cold sores, certain medications, and recent sun exposure. Skin type and history are reviewed closely, and if Erbium or another option is the safer, better fit, that’s what will be recommended.

What CO2 Pairs Well With

Resurfacing works on the surface, but real rejuvenation also restores what’s underneath. CO2 pairs well with biostimulators like Radiesse or RF microneedling, sequenced safely so both the surface and the foundation improve together.

Ablative Resurfacing Belongs in Expert Hands

The settings, the depth, skin-type safety, and the aftercare together decide whether CO2 delivers a transformation or a complication. That’s why every treatment is carried out start to finish by Deborah Lenchus, MSN, APRN — never delegated — with more than twenty years behind the laser. Deborah also teaches these techniques to other nurse practitioners, PAs, and physicians through both LuXe Concierge Aesthetics and Elevate Aesthetics Academy, and has performed live VI Peel demonstrations and presented at medical conferences sponsored by VI Peel.

How Phoenix CO2 Laser Works

The Phoenix CO2 Laser delivers precise pulses of laser energy into the skin, creating tiny microscopic zones of controlled damage. These micro-injuries trigger the body’s natural healing process, stimulating collagen production and replacing old, damaged skin cells with fresh, new ones. This results in firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

Key benefits include:

  • Reduces fine lines, wrinkles & acne scars
  • Improves skin tone, texture & elasticity
  • Stimulates collagen for long-term skin strengthening
  • Enhances overall skin brightness & clarity
  • Delivers significant results with a shorter recovery time compared to traditional CO2 laser

How Does CO2 Laser Compare to Other Laser Treatments?

Unlike IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or non-ablative lasers, fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is an ablative treatment, meaning it removes the outer skin layer to promote deep skin regeneration. This leads to more dramatic and long-lasting results.

  • CO2 Laser is Ablative – Removes the outer skin layer for more significant improvements.
  • Fractional Technology – Treats only a fraction of the skin at a time, allowing for faster healing.
  • Deep Collagen Stimulation – Leads to firmer, smoother skin over time.
  • Long-Lasting Results – While non-ablative lasers provide milder improvements, CO2 resurfacing offers more dramatic skin renewal.

What to Expect During Your CO2 Laser Treatment

This in-office procedure is performed under topical anesthesia for maximum comfort. Depending on your skin concerns, we can adjust the depth and intensity of the treatment to target specific areas such as the entire face, eyes, mouth, forehead, neck, hands, or scars. Most sessions take 30-60 minutes, and results continue to improve over several months as collagen rebuilds.

Thanks to the efficiency of ablative CO2 treatment, many patients achieve their desired results in just one session, though your provider will recommend the ideal plan for your skin and goals.

Post-Treatment Care

Days 1–4:

  • Swelling is normal — sleep with your head elevated for the first two days, on your back on a clean pillowcase.
  • Discomfort is minimal and feels like a sunburn for about 1–2 hours; cool compresses may help. Tylenol may be used for discomfort, and an over-the-counter antihistamine (Benadryl or Claritin) for itching or swelling.
  • Cleanse gently twice a day with a mild cleanser (such as Cetaphil or CeraVe) or 8 oz water with 1 tsp white vinegar, and pat dry with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Keep skin moist by reapplying the occlusive ointment or moisturizer your provider gives you. Do not use other skincare products unless instructed, and do not scratch or pick at healing skin.
  • Avoid direct sun and avoid exercise for four days. Continue drinking at least 64 oz of water per day.

Days 5–10:

  • Healing varies; your skin may be pink at this stage.
  • Continue avoiding direct sun for at least four weeks (up to six months for best results). Begin a zinc/titanium dioxide sunscreen once the skin has healed over, and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Ask your provider when to resume makeup, exercise, and active products such as hydroquinone and retinol.
  • Deeper skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation — notify your provider right away if any area begins to darken.

Am I a Candidate for Phoenix CO2 Laser?

The best way to know is a consultation, where your provider assesses your skin type and health history.

CO2 laser resurfacing works best on lighter to medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV). Because deeper skin tones carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary darkening), skin type IV — such as olive skin — is pre-treated with a skin-prep regimen for several weeks beforehand to lower that risk; pre-treatment is also recommended for skin type III when a more aggressive treatment is planned. Very deep skin tones (types V–VI) are generally not candidates for ablative resurfacing.

This treatment is also generally not recommended if you:

  • Are pregnant, possibly pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have an active infection, or an active or recurrent cold sore in the treatment area (an antiviral may be prescribed first)
  • Have used isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 12 months
  • Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Have an autoimmune or immune-compromising condition, or uncontrolled diabetes
  • Take anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication
  • Have a history of skin cancer or a suspicious or pre-malignant lesion in the treatment area

At your consultation we review all of this and let you know whether CO2 laser resurfacing — or a gentler alternative — is right for you.

What is fractional CO2 laser resurfacing?

Fractional CO2 is an ablative laser that sends tiny columns of energy deep into the skin, creating controlled micro-injuries while leaving the skin between them intact so healing is faster. It resurfaces damaged skin and triggers a strong collagen-rebuilding response, making it the most powerful option for texture, scarring, and wrinkles.
K
L

What does CO2 laser treat?

CO2 laser is suited to deeper concerns: fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and other scarring, significant sun damage, enlarged pores, rough texture, and early laxity. It also works beautifully on the neck, chest, and hands.
K
L

How long is the downtime after CO2 laser?

CO2 has real downtime. Skin is typically red, swollen, and sensitive, and it peels and heals over about five to seven days, followed by pinkness that fades over the next few weeks. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided and support is available throughout healing.
K
L

When will I see CO2 results and how long do they last?

You will see smoother, fresher skin as you heal, and results continue improving for months as new collagen builds. Because the treatment rebuilds your own collagen and removes damaged skin, results are long-lasting, especially with sun protection and good skin care.
K
L

Is CO2 laser safe for all skin tones?

CO2 requires extra caution in darker skin tones because of a higher risk of pigment change. Skin type and history are assessed carefully, and if Erbium or another option is a safer fit for your skin, that is what will be recommended.
K
L

Does CO2 laser hurt?

The area is numbed with topical anesthetic beforehand, and additional comfort measures are used as needed, so the treatment itself is tolerable. Afterward, the skin feels like a warm sunburn for the first day or two.
K
L

How much does CO2 laser cost?

Cost depends on the area treated and the depth of the treatment. Because CO2 is customized to your skin and goals, you receive a clear quote at your consultation.
K
L

How many CO2 sessions will I need?

Many concerns improve dramatically after a single treatment, thanks to the depth of CO2. Some patients choose a series for scarring or significant sun damage. Your plan is tailored at the consultation.
K
L

What are the risks and side effects of CO2 laser?

Expected effects include redness, swelling, peeling, and temporary pinkness during healing. Less common risks include pigment change, infection, or scarring, all of which are minimized by correct settings, skin-type safety, and diligent aftercare. Choosing an experienced provider is the most important safeguard.
K
L

Can CO2 laser be combined with other treatments?

Yes. CO2 resurfaces the surface, and it is often paired with biostimulators or RF microneedling to rebuild the deeper foundation, sequenced safely so both the surface and the structure improve together.
